Professor Giuseppe Merra was born in 1978, graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 2004 from the Faculty of Medicine "Agostino Gemelli" of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome, and specialized in Internal Medicine, in 2009, at the same University. In 2013, he obtained a PhD in Oncobiology and Medical Oncology and a second-level MS in Dietetics and Nutrition at the Faculty of Medicine "Agostino Gemelli" of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome. Since 2012, he has been a Fellow of the European Federation of Internal Medicine (EFIM) and, since 2017, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine of London (RSM). From 2010 to 2019, he was staff physician at the Operative Unit of Emergency Medicine of the "Agostino Gemelli" General Hospital Foundation in Rome and, since 2017, he has been chair of Gastroenterology at the School of Specialization in Infectious and Tropical Diseases of the Faculty of Medicine of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Rome. From 2019 to 2022, Prof. Merra was a Researcher at the Section of Clinical Nutrition and Nutrigenomics of the Department of Biomedicine and Prevention at the University of Rome Tor Vergata and, since 2022, he is, in the same location, Associate Professor of Applied Dietetic Technical Sciences. Since 2021 he has been, at the proposal of the Minister of Defense, by decree of the President of the Republic, "Medical Officer" of ACISMOM (Italian Association of Knights of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta). The main fields of interest are: dietary approach in metabolic diseases, DNA (nutrition and eating disorders), intestinal permeability, microbiota and modulation of low-grade inflammation with diet therapy, epidemiology of gastroduodenal Helicobacter Pylori infection and pathogenesis of gastric damage, extradigestive manifestations of Helicobacter Pylori infection, mechanism of action, identification of indications and therapeutic dosages of various pre- and pro-biotics in digestive tract diseases, characterization of the intestinal ecoflora under physiological, paraphysiological and pathological conditions, extra-intestinal manifestations of celiac disease, new diagnostic methods (serological, endoscopic) in celiac disease, classification and etiopathogenesis of Gut and Irritable Bowel Syndrome, therapy of small intestine bacterial contamination syndrome (SIBO), standardization and identification of new stable isotope-labeled substrates for analysis by "Breath testing" of liver, pancreas, intestine and stomach diseases. Prof. Merra is, in addition: member of prestigious national and international medical societies; director of editorial boards of journals of recognized prestige; member of research groups characterized by collaborations at the national or international level; member of the Board of Lecturers within PhDs accredited by the Ministry; responsible for scientific studies and research entrusted by qualified public and/or private institutions; scientific responsible for research projects, international and national, admitted to funding on the basis of competitive calls. He has been a speaker at more than 100 symposia, of national and international relevance. He is the author or co-author of more than 150 scientific articles, as well as chapters in texts and treatises. Currently his IF exceeds 500 and his H-index is 20.
